DataCenter Packet Loss Issues

A Fiber was cut a few miles from one of our datacenters, and this caused the brief outages that some of our customers saw. The data center is on redundant lines, but it took about 30 minutes to get completely switched over. Everything should be fine now.

Latency Issues

Â We were under the impression that the issue had been resolved by our upstream provider but we are again noticing this latency. DNS Issues - Updated

The primary DNS server is back online.Â We had to assign a new IP address to the primary DNS server which will take some time to propagate. This will not cause any downtime for sites that are currently working, however, if you have a site that is not working this is good news.Â Your sites should be back online very soon. "On 10-20-2010 at approximately 08:200 CST, LT Network Engineering was made aware of a high-traffic condition in the Cedar Falls data center. LT Network Engineering engaged our upstream providers to mitigate the attack and to determine those responsible. As of 08:40 CST, the attack has been mitigated and traffic levels have returned to normal. As with all situations of this nature, LT Network Engineering will maintain a heightened level of awareness with respect to this situation and will resume an aggressive resolution posture should that become necessary."

We have received notice from our Data Center that there is a Network Issue affecting two of our main Data Centers. Here are the details straight from our Data Center:

An Update to Yesterday's Issues

This is an update to all shared Windows hosting customers on the Madison.SurgeServers.Net HELM cluster that were affected by yesterdays outage.Â If you did not have an outage of your website or you did but you are not on a shared Windows hosting plan, than this does not pertain to your site.Â

As I am sure most of you are aware that we had a lengthy outage yesterday and that when we were finally able to restore services a lot of data was out of date.Â If you were not already aware, we do have current backups that we can restore if needed, just place a support ticket and we will make it happen.Â Once we were able to get everything back online we started to figure out what had happened and while we are still working with Microsoft to determine the exact root of the issue, our preliminary investigation concluded that it was a security issue in HELM that caused our Windows installs to not boot properly.Â Because of this, and the fact that HELM has reached end of life, we have decided to avoid any future issue by upgrading our servers and changing to a new control panel.

We will be installing new servers that run Windows Server 2008 R2 that are controlled by Dot Net Panel.Â Dot Net Panel is very similar to HELM but it has a smaller footprint on the server and is supported by newer technology, which HELM is not. Making the switch to Dot Net Panel will allow us to be able to utilize the new features in IIS7 as well as upgrade the versions of MS SQL and Coldfusion on our servers.Â

We will be sending out more information, with specific dates of when the transition will take, place very soon so please continue to monitor our news section for updates.

Issues with MSN email

It has come to our attention that MSN has implimented a new spam policy that is causing a lot of our servers to get blacklisted.Â According to MSN, the majority of the problems are due to user forwarding emails that were sent to their accounts on our servers to a MSN or Hotmail account.Â If you are forwarding emails to MSN or Hotmail you need to enable SpamAssassin or create filters to eliminate spam being sent to MSN via our servers.Â It would be a good idea to do this if you forward to any other outside email address as well.
